Chinese New Year!

If you are getting married between February and May 2012, please be aware that Chinese New Year will be celebrated January 22-28, 2012.

What does this mean to you as a bride? The factories that make several of our top designer gowns will close down for 2-4 weeks around those dates. This always affects the production schedule and available ship dates for special order gowns and we have already received ship dates into April for some of our orders.

If you are planning a wedding in the first 6 months of 2012, we encourage you to have all of your special orders finalized very soon.

It was a dream to work with Bridal Elegance. When I found the dress online, I knew it was perfect for the beach wedding my fiancé and I were planning. Various area boutiques carried the dress according to the website of the designer. Prior to selecting a boutique with which to set an appointment to try on the dress, I called to ask questions such as price of the gown, availability of accessories, etc. Bridal Elegance seemed to be the most knowledgeable about the dress as well as the best most affordable. Once at the boutique, I knew that both the dress and the establishment were the right fit for me. The staff was attentive and pleasant, never once making me feel rushed or the small size of the bridal party insignificant. Leading up to the momentous occasion, I was working two jobs and attending school full-time. Bridal Elegance understood my time commitments and worked around my schedule, being considerate of my hectic schedule by their promptness at my appointment times. Aubrey, my seamstress, excelled in her vocation. She went above and beyond just doing fittings by taking the time to suggest jewelry and to present multiple options for a wrap to compliment the gown. I cannot overemphasize how pleased I am with how my big day turned out, thanks in part to this gem of a boutique. Many thanks to Bridal Elegance for a gown that aptly reflected my fairytale day.

New Designs from The National Bridal Market!

Wow! What a weekend to be at the National Bridal market Chicago! We are having so much fun and there are so many amazing new designs and silhouettes. Check out a few of our favorites from Kathy Ireland for 2Be.

Delicate lace and illusion straps make this dress a showstopper. Beautiful rosettes create an empire waist that is flattering and elegant. And the tulle overlay on the skirt adds just the right touch of romance.

Here is another example of a refined but elegant silhouette. A sweetheart neckline, with fitted asymmetrical drop waist, gives you a beautiful hourglass shape. The embroidery covering the bodice and trailing down the skirt, make it unforgettable.

An embellished one-shoulder strap, with ruched bodice flatters so many shapes. Artfully placed embroidery and pick-ups in the skirt add to the dress' playful nature. A nod to tradition with a twist of modern!

1. What is the JW Marriott? And how long have you been around?

The JW Marriott Grand Rapids is a luxury brand hotel with a upscale yet comfortable feel. The hotel opened in September of 2007. 3.What is your favorite wedding memory?

My favorite JW wedding memory is receiving a big hug from a very excited mother-of-the-bride upon her arrival to the hotel the day before the wedding. She was our main contact throughout the whole process. The excitement is so contagious. It is a great reminder of the big picture of our job. It is a pleasure to be a part of such a special occasion in someone’s life.

We recently talked with Russ & Rebecca Clime, Michigan wedding photographers and owners of Tiberius Images, to learn how they got started in the photography business, what makes them different and their tips for brides. Besides being some of the nicest people you will ever get to work with, they also take some of the most amazing photos! 1. BE-What is Tiberius Images? What lead you to be a photographer?

TI-Rewind to 2003. In order to complete our degrees, my wife and I spent 6 months living abroad. In Europe I met my match: the Camera! Seeing just a small portion of the beauty that makes up our world is indescribable and life changing. We returned in 2004. I found a photography mentor and spent an entire year developing technical skills under his amazing instruction. Tiberius Images was born. Now, in combination with my wife and 2 associate photographers, we specialize in weddings and business events. Capturing photographs of the most important moments for our clients, is like archiving their personal stories. Tiberius Images ensures that memories and moments will never be forgotten.

2. BE-What makes Tiberius stand out from other photographers?

TI-There are many Michigan wedding photographers out there and we strive everyday to create amazing experiences for the couples we work with. We believe speed is of the essence with wedding photos, which is why on the wedding day (during the reception to be specific) we will put together a 30-40 image slide show of the bride and groom from earlier in the day. It gives their guests the ability to see what happened outside of the ceremony. Later in the night, we will upload those images to Facebook and those photos will become the “official” Facebook wedding photos. Check out www.facebook.com/tiberiusimages for some examples.

Every couple we work with receives a custom, hand-bound Italian album. Many couples have never thought of having a wedding album after their wedding day, but when they learn that we include a DVD of hi-res images when we deliver their album, all of a sudden the choice of “digital images vs. wedding album” goes away – they can have both with us!

We also create individual wedding websites for couples to show off their engagement session photos. This site also allows them to put wedding details online, have guests RSVP through their site, create an itinerary and “things to do” section for out of town guests and much more! 3. BE-What is one of your funniest memories?

TI-While downtown with a couple, we told the groom to “pick up his bride and swing her around”. His response… “I don’t know if you know this, but I am a former Olympic hammer thrower. Do you want me to really swing her? ”

4. BE-Best advice for a couple looking for a photographer?

TI-When searching for a photographer, we would suggest that you concentrate on the following:

1.PORTFOLIO: Ask to see an entire wedding to really view their style. Anyone can get lucky on a few shoots, what you should be looking for is consistency. Many people will tell you that they can morph their style to fit your needs, but think of it this way, if a classic musician is asked to create a piece of rock music, won’t that piece of music be very “classical” in nature because that’s who the composer is?

2.PERSONALITY: Do you like the photographer? Do you feel comfortable about who they are, their work ethic and their ability to deliver? Make sure that you meet them in person if possible. Get to know them. You are making a considerable investment, so feel free to interview them!

3.PRICE: Once you've found a photographer that fits the other two, address the thing everyone thinks should be first: Price. Remember that most studios are flexible and can either add things to or take things away from their list of packages to meet your budget needs.

4.PRODUCTS: Does the photographer know their craft? Can they tell you where their albums come from and how they are made? Are you viewing products that have the potential to outlast technology changes? Are they timeless?

5. BE-What is your best advice on how to look great in your photos?

TI-I have three basic suggestions for every shoot:

1.Be comfortable in your own skin. 80% of beauty is attitude! This is your day…feel like a goddess and let it shine in the photographs.

2.Be in tune with your body shape. What does this mean? Know which features you want to accentuate and which you would like to down play. Discuss this with your dress provider and your photographer. A good professional will have extensive experience with all body types and will be able to provide suggestions about styles and angles.

3.Be a good listener as the photographer should have experience and suggestions on how to look your best.

You found your gown, but something doesn't seem quite right... it doesn't lay perfect here, and it feels a little loose there. What happened? It looked great in pictures on the models! I know it is something we all want to avoid, but guess what? Everyone may need some alterations on their dream dress to make it fit their unique and beautiful figure. The idea of alterations can be a little overwhelming, but to simplify the process Bridal Elegance has an expert alteration staff who can make your gown fit and flatter you! Here is a list of what to expect and how to prepare for your alterations appointment since we all know it is best to plan ahead.

o Be sure to plan for alterations in your wedding budget. Unlike what we have heard from the "good ole' days," alterations are typically not included in the price of gowns. Alteration fees can vary depending on the amount of changes and complexity, but typical alterations necessary include shortening the gown, bustling, side seam work and shortening the straps.

o When you arrive for your first fitting, it is essential to bring the undergarments that you will be wearing with your gown. Properly fitting lingerie will not only ensure a smooth fit, but will prepare you for a comfortable and confident walk down the aisle. Ask your seamstress about bust cups if you would like to forgo wearing a bra for more comfort.

o Remember to bring your shoes to your fittings to help the seamstress perfect the length of your gown. When picking out shoes, keep comfort in mind to ensure that your memories will be about the beauty of the day and not the extreme pain your feet were in as you limped down the aisle. You may also plan to change to more comfortable shoes for the reception, but it is always a good idea to have the gown hemmed to the perfect length for the ceremony and pictures. You do not want your gown too long or too short as you make your grand entrance and everyone turns to watch you walk down the aisle.

o After alterations are completed at Bridal Elegance, our alterations experts will take the time to press and prepare your gown for the big day.

Are you looking for creative ways to let your guests know about your upcoming wedding? Save-the-date cards are the best way to let everyone know. If you are planning a destination wedding, or a multi-day extravaganza, it is best to give wedding guests ample time to prepare. If you are expecting a lot of out of town guests, who may need to book airline flights, you really need to let them know. Traditionally invitations go out 8 weeks prior to the wedding, but save-the-date cards should go out at least 6 months prior. Longer for more elaborate destinations, so guests can plan vacation time, travel and budget for the expense.

There are tons of cute and creative ways to send out your save-the-date information. No need to be as formal as your wedding invitation (unless you want to be!), save-the-date's are a great way to inject your personality into the wedding. They are also a great way to get guests excited about your upcoming big day! These "message in the bottle" save-the-dates would be perfect for a beach themed wedding or destination wedding. Add a little sand and a sea shell or umbrella to a plastic bottle and send them off!

How about vintage handkerchiefs? These save-the-dates do double duty...they inform the guests and make a nice keepsake that they can use to dry their happy tears at your wedding! Collect vintage handkerchiefs at antique stores or flea markets, or order new, then have them screen printed or embroidered with all your information!

Ready - A Grooms Cake

In the great southern tradition, the theme for the Groom's Cake is a surprise for the groom and is chosen by the bride. Think back to the classic scene in "Steel Magnolias" where all the women are having a discussion about a red and gray cake in the shape of an armadillo. That armadillo was the groom’s red velvet cake that Shelby was planning to give her husband to be.

The main wedding cake has often been called the Bride's Cake. Some think that the Groom's Cake is a relatively new tradition. It is a southern tradition, but it was originated in the 17th century, so the Groom's Cake is really a very old wedding tradition somehow lost and now rediscovered.

Grand Rapids makes an ideal wedding destination with its large selection of venues, proximity to Grand River and cultural historical sites and communities. Providing both quaint, intimate settings as well as large lavish ones, you have many options in the Grand Rapids area. Once you have set your wedding date you can begin making the important decisions that will help to create your dream wedding.

Visit a variety of venues before deciding where you would like to have your ceremony. Fountain Street Church offers weddings for nonmembers and has a package deal that includes a ceremony coordinator, music, candles and a social hall. Cascade Christian Church is another church in the area that allows members and nonmembers the opportunity to marry in the church. You may even bring your own pastor. Wedding chapels in the area include Point of Grace Wedding Chapel and Apple Blossom Chapel and Gardens. These chapels offer non-denominational services, historic buildings and affordable pricing. Consider a garden or the beach for an outdoor ceremony, or the Twin Gables Inn to have your ceremony on the pond, beach or vineyard. Book your ceremony location 12 months ahead of time if possible.

Discuss your ideal reception location. Include in your conversation factors such as size, price, type of decor and style. The venue you select will depend mostly on your personal preferences. Consider the Mosaic Space for a modern affair that includes 4000 square feet of space adequate for 175 guests, a stage, kitchen and bar. If you would like a cultural venue that is different from the norm, try the Grand Rapids Public Museum that features its own catering and beverage service with hundreds of options from which to choose. Another option is to have a personal cruise for your wedding aboard the Grand Lady Riverboat in Grand Rapids. Catering and entertainment is provided as part of your package and you can personalize your cruise to suit your needs.

Shop for your wedding dress and the rest of the bridal party attire. Bridal Elegance offers standard and plus-size bridal gowns, bridesmaids dresses and tuxedos.

Retain the services of a minister for your wedding. Take any religious classes or premarital counseling as required by your church or officiant. If you are having a ceremony outside of a chapel or church, consider having a friend receive her officiant's license through an online ordination such as the one offered by American Fellowship Church or look online for a list of all available officiants in the area on Wedding Wire.

Order your flowers or plan to create your own floral arrangements. Ball Park Floral offers lush bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids. Designing Dreams creates a variety of bridal bouquets as well as upscale ceremony and reception arrangements.

Book the services of a musician, dj or other entertainment group. Go to the Grand Rapids Bride website for a comprehensive list of musical vendors as well as photographers, videographers, rental companies and bakers. Arrange for all necessary services.

Visit the Kent County Clerk's Office and apply for your marriage license. Complete the necessary paperwork, pay the fee, and avail yourself for blood tests as required by your state.Only the bride or groom is required to apply in person or you may opt to apply online for a minimal $3 fee as of 2011. You must provide proof of identification and age. The license is valid for up to 33 days and you must apply at least three days before your wedding.

Tips & Warnings

Plan ahead of time as much as possible to have adequate time to tend to all of the details. Keep copies of vendor contracts and save the company phone numbers in your cell phone for convenience.
Keep in mind the cold Grand Rapids weather common most of the year. Use indoor sites during the evening hours or inquire about ways to heat outdoor areas.
